The original company was founded on 25 March 1926 by John Alan Gilbert and began bus operations under the name of John A Gilbert Pty Limited. In 1943 John A Gilbert acquired Tamworth's bus services and in 1946, Berrima and Orange joined the group. Today, the company, known as the Buslines Group, also includes services in Ballina, Bathurst, Berrima, Dubbo, Forster, Griffith, Lithgow, Northern Rivers, Orange, Tamworth, Ulladulla and Wingham. These subsidiaries and affiliated businesses form a network of quality bus services which is unparalleled anywhere in Australia. With around thirty-six buses in its fleet, Tamworth Buslines is the largest bus operation in the district, meeting the needs of its community by providing an extensive town and school bus network, including regional services to outlying settlements at Bendemeer, Manilla and Werris Creek & Quirindi.
In January, Tamworth Buslines puts people in touch with the heart of Australian country. It is the major provider of bus services for the Australasian Country Music Festival held in Tamworth each year. The Festival has become one of Australia’s biggest and Tamworth Buslines has responsibility for transporting more than 100,000 people to entertainment venues throughout the city.
